Try Boro Kids 5K

Carter ran his first 5K race tonight!  The race is only for kids up to 14 years old and they have both a 5K and 2.5K race.  The race was in Murfreesboro, which is about 30 minutes away.

Because this was Carter's first time running such a long race, I did it with him.  The course was 2 loops of a lollipop route, but Carter still was a little worried about knowing which way to go.  I loved getting to run with him though and want to do another race with him again soon!

First lap ...

Second lap ...

Carter did GREAT!  He finished in 32:04.  He ran the first two miles in under 10 minute pace but got a side stitch that last mile and had to walk a lot more.  But he pushed through and did it (and even sprinted the last 0.2 miles).

Sprinting it in ...

Carter got a very nice finishers medal but he really wanted to get a trophy too.  Unfortunately he finished in 4th place in the 7 and under category.  I told him we'd run another race again soon and try again to place.

Our neighbors (and friends) also ran the race.  Here's Carter with Emory, Cade, and Avery.  The twins are also in kindergarten and did the 2.5K.  Avery is in 4th grade and ran the 5K like Carter (she got 2nd in her age group).

I'm so proud of Carter for not giving up.  The last part of the race was really tough for him, but he still gave it his all.  And I'm proud that he wasn't too disappointed in not getting a trophy.  He's so competitive but still maintains such a good and positive attitude!

New 'Do

We finally had an afternoon with no commitments so I took the boys to get their hair cut (which was especially overdue for Rylan).

Carter is trying a new look.  What do you think?

6 Month Checkup

Grayson had his 6 month checkup yesterday.  He still has the low grade fever and we have decided (with the pediatrician) that Grayson's normal temperature just runs high and there is nothing to worry about right now.  I'll continue to monitor his temperature to make sure we don't reach the 101F threshold.

As far his physical exam, Grayson looks great.  He's developing normally with no delays.

He is a little chubby though :)

Grayson's 6 month stats:
  • Weight: 20 lbs, 13 oz (95th percentile)
  • Length: 26.75 inches (56th percentile)
  • Head Circumference: 46.3 cm (99th percentile)
Grayson's 4 month stats:
  • Weight: 17 lbs, 3 oz (84th percentile)
  • Length: 25.25 inches (58th percentile)
  • Head Circumference: 43.3 cm (93rd percentile)

Grayson got 3 shots and an oral vaccine.  He's been running a higher fever of around 101.5 but that was already going down tonight.  He screamed through the shots but calmed down as soon as I picked him up.

Grayson goes back at 9 months for his next checkup.

Lett-uce Entertain You

At last week's gardening class, the kids planted salad ingredients in a raised bed in the garden.  Farmer Jim was there too to teach the kids all about lettuce.

The kids planted two tomato plants and then there were several kinds of lettuce for them to plant.

Next the kids planted carrot and radish seeds.  Prepping the soil for seed tape ...

Laying down the seed tape and covering it with dirt ...

Carter is ...

Carter brought these papers home a few weeks ago.  I didn't get out of him what the activity was exactly but I thought I'd share the kind words Carter's friends wrote about him.

My favorite is from Laney.  She wrote, "You are mine".

And this is how sweet Carter described himself ...

Carter described himself as happy, cool, a good friend, 2 brothers, kind of shy, smart, and fun.  I agree!!!

Carrots

Little man tried carrots yesterday.

They were yummy ...

And messy!

Gardening Class

The boys had their first gardening classes of the year last week.  They are doing the Growing Kids Educational Garden through the Franklin Farmers Market again this year with the classes being at Harlinsdale Farm.

Carter and Rylan were so excited to be doing this again.  I was wondering if they would be getting bored since the classes are about the same each year.  However, they were talking about getting to go for days beforehand.  They couldn't wait to find their boots and gloves.

Tuesday was a make-up class for the previous Thursday when it rained.  Carter had a baseball game and Rylan and soccer practice on Tuesday so we had to leave early from class.

The first class was called "Seedy Characters & Flower Power".  It has been raining so much lately that the garden hasn't been plowed yet.  So the kids planted some seeds in trays and then planted some plants in random containers (like old boots, a tin can, and egg basket).

The kids also planted mystery seeds in a pot to take home.  We had to do the actual planting at home since we had to leave early.  So far there aren't any sprouts but maybe soon (however, I definitely don't have a green thumb and a lot of hope).

Thursday's class was called "Potato Power".  We only had Carter's soccer practice after this class so we got to say the whole time.

The kids learned all about potatoes and then got to plant some.  First they had to pull off the longer sprouts.

And then, since the garden still isn't plowed, the kids planted the potatoes in bags of soil that were placed in milk crates.

Hopefully the weather cooperates and we get to get in the actual garden soon!

Squash

Grayson tried a new food on Friday - squash.

Initial reaction was not good.

But he quickly changed his mind.

Yummy!

So far this guy is eating solids great!

Fever Update

We took Grayson to the pediatrician again Wednesday because he is still running the low grade fever of 100F (+/- 0.5).

Just to be sure we didn't miss anything with the first round of blood work, Dr. Huss did another white blood cell count and everything looked fine.  Grayson has no other symptoms (such as being lethargic, swelling, extreme fussiness, etc) so Dr. Huss doesn't feel we need to do additional testing.  We are still going with this is something viral.

Dr. Huss consulted another pediatrician and she doesn't even consider 100F a fever and wouldn't be concerned.  Dr. Huss still thinks something is going on but is happy with Grayson's development and doesn't think we need to worry.

We go back in about 2 weeks for Grayson's 6 month checkup so we can discuss the fever with him again then if Grayson still has it.
