The boys had their last dual swim meet on Tuesday. Tomorrow and Saturday is the County Championship Meet so I need to go ahead and do a quick post about Tuesday!
This was the only away meet we had this season and it was at the Longview Rec Center in Spring Hill. Our swim team is big but Longview's is even bigger and they have a lot of year round swimmers (as opposed to summer swimmers like Carter and Rylan).
The boys tried hard and Carter even got three PRs. Rylan didn't swim an individual freestyle but I timed his freestyle in his relay and he's taken off several seconds. I'm excited to see how he does tomorrow in that stroke! Unfortunately we had stricter judges this week and Rylan had a couple of DQs but he luckily had a pretty good attitude about them.
Here are the results from Tuesday ...
Rylan:
Boys 7-8 Years Old - 25 Yard Backstroke - 28.27 seconds (5th)
Boys 7-8 Years Old - 100 Yard Freestyle Relay - 2:22.44 (7th)

NSC - Game 6 - Player Escorts!!!
Nashville Soccer Club is participating in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup this season. The tournament includes 94 teams with 20 being MLS teams and 22 being USL teams (which is the league NSC is in). NCS made it to the fourth round game and played the Colorado Rapids (an MLS Team) on Wednesday, June 6th (Brian's birthday). The game was at Vanderbilt's football stadium and we bought tickets (these games aren't part of our season ticket package). However, in an email from the club, they were offering the opportunity for kids of season ticket holders to be player escorts for the game. You just had to be one of the first to call at 10am the next day. And I was! So Carter and Rylan got to be player escorts!!!
We met outside the stadium before they opened the gates ...
Then the boys got to watch both teams warm up near the player tunnel ...
They were standing next to Tim Howard!!!
Unfortunately Howard was not the starting goalie for the Rapids. But Carter has really started to enjoy playing goalie and was really excited to see him.
The player escorts get to walk out with the players and stand with them during the national anthem.
Carter was paired with the Rapids' captain (Tommy Smith) and Rylan was paired with the Rapids' goalie (Zac MacMath).
Nashville played well that night ...
And beat the Rapids!!!
And we were super excited to be back in front row seats at midfield like we were last year :)
We stayed for a few minutes after the game and enjoyed the excitement of beating a MLS team!
And we even got London Woodberry and Lebo Moloto to sign the boys' shirts they had worn as escorts.
It was a great night of soccer!!!
Last night NSC played Louisville City FC (one of the other two USL teams still in the Open Cup) and unfortunately lost 2-1. They had an awesome run in the tournament and we enjoyed getting to watch some extra games!

WNSL Tournament
Carter's baseball team participated in their first tournament ever last weekend. Carter still plays in the recreational division of baseball and it's mostly the open division that does tournaments. This last year (fall and spring) were his first seasons of kid pitch. In the spring, he settled into playing catcher and caught in every game except for one in which he pitched.
Carter's team entered a local tournament run by WNSL (West Nashville Sports League). The games were at the Warner Park fields so 30-45 minutes from home depending on traffic. Most (or all) of the other teams were from open divisions or the all-star team from their league. So Carter's team was generally going up against kids with more experience and practice time.
There were only 6 teams in the 9 year old division. That meant there were 2 sets of 3 teams that played each other Thursday through Saturday morning. Carter's team lost both of their games so that made them 3rd place in their grouping. They had to play the 2nd place team in the other grouping Saturday afternoon. They won that game and were to play the 1st place team in their own grouping on Sunday. Unfortunately Sunday was a washout but because his age group had so few teams, WNSL allowed them to play on Monday. Carter's team was leading most of the game but when they had to switch pitchers because our guy hit his pitch limit, the other team started hitting and our guys made some fielding errors. The boys ended up losing that game (which was the semi-finals).
It was still a great experience doing a tournament and seeing how they are run. And the boys were super close to taking home a trophy which would have been pretty cool. Maybe next year :)

Swim Meet #2
The big boys had their second swim meet of the season on Tuesday. This time we were there for the whole meet.
The boys don't get to pick what events they swim - Coach Jim assigns them to events. Rylan got to try out both breaststroke and butterfly this week. He wasn't too excited because he was afraid of DQing. He's still waiting for his chance to swim backstroke (his best stroke).
I volunteered to help with organizing relays this week and when there was a no show in Rylan's age group for medley relay, I let Coach Jim know Rylan was available. And it worked out that he filled the backstroke spot. Backstroke is the first leg of the medley relay and Rylan put his team in first after the first leg. Unfortunately the kids doing breast and fly DQ'd the group, but I think Coach Jim saw how fast Rylan was. So hopefully Rylan will get his chance next week!
Rylan actually did NOT DQ in breaststroke and finished second!!! I think he was super happy to place second overall on his first attempt at breast! It was a difficult meet for him because he's our perfectionist and knowing he was going to DQ in some events wasn't easy for him to handle. But he did it and even finished the IM even though there were tears beforehand.
Rylan's events and times:
Boys 7-8 Years Old - 100 Yard Freestyle Relay - 2:07.39 (3rd)
Boys 7-8 Years Old - 25 Yard Breaststroke - 41.03 seconds (2nd)
Carter had a great meet. Both of his relay teams placed first! And he had his best times ever in every event he swam.
Carter's events and times:
Boys 9-10 Years Old - 25 Yard Backstroke - 25.38 seconds (5th)
Boys 9-10 Years Old - 100 Yard Freestyle Relay - 1:17.28 (1st)
Boys 9-10 Years Old - 25 Yard Breaststroke - 32.71 seconds (7th)
Boys 9-10 Years Old - 100 Yard Medley Relay - 1:29.59 (1st)
Boys 9-10 Years Old - 100 Yard Individual Medley - 2:28.16 (6th)
The boys have two more regular meets and then the championship meet!

Swim Meet #1
Carter and Rylan had their first swim meet of the season on Tuesday. They are swimming with the Nolensville Hurricanes again. This year I did not have the boys do swim lessons with Mr. Gareth before the season. So they are starting off without a week of intense lessons. In the past they start off much stronger than most summer swimmers but don't improve much over the season. This year they are starting off more average but will hopefully improve their times dramatically over the season.
Both boys also moved up an age group this season so they are the younger swimmers in their events. Each age group covers two years so Rylan is swimming with the 7-8 year olds and Carter is with the 9-10 year olds.
The boys did a golf camp this week so Rylan had to practice with Carter's age group so we could make it to the camp on time. That also meant missing most of the swim meet.
The boys got to swim their freestyle events before we had to leave.
Here is Rylan's event (he is in lane 2 - lane 1 is the closest lane in the video).
His time was 32.16 seconds. His best time last season was 29.47 seconds. He placed 14th out of 25 (which he was not happy about at all). But I thought he did great.
Here is Carter's event (he is in lane 6 - the furthest away in the video).
His time was 20.24 seconds, which is his best time ever (his previous best was 22.45 seconds). He placed 5th out of 20 swimmers.
Then because the meet is so long, we came back for the boys to swim the IM after their golf camp. They weren't too excited about it because they were tired but it was good to get an IM under their belt.
Unfortunately both boys DQ'd. Rylan just learned both butterfly and breaststroke in the last week so it wasn't surprising. They both take awhile to learn to do perfectly. And Rylan swallowed some water during breast and panicked so he could have DQ'd for a bunch of reasons. Carter DQ'd for a scissor kick which probably happened because he was so tired. IM is tough as you have to do one lap of each stroke.
We are looking forward to being at the rest of the meets for the whole time. And Rylan hopefully getting to swim backstroke which is his best event!

NSC - Game 5
Last night we went to the Nashville Soccer Club game against Penn FC. It was a great game and NSC won 3-1.
It was warm but at least it didn't rain! By the end of the game this kids hair was completely soaked - he looked like he just came out of the pool.
The highlight for the big boys was getting new NCS hats!
NSC plays the Colorado Rapids next week in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. We bought tickets for the game. Carter is excited to see Tim Howard because he's very much into playing goalie lately.

Half Pint Triathlon
This morning Carter did the Half Pint Triathlon at the Franklin Rec Center.
It is only for kids age 8-12 (on race day unlike sanctioned triathlons which is based on your age on December 31st). We were out of town for it last year so this was the first year that Carter did this tri. He was in the junior division (which is for ages 8 and 9). It's a shorter triathlon - 50 meter swim, 1.5 mile bike, and 0.5 mile run. Carter was excited for the shorter distance. I wanted to get in a run yesterday so he and Rylan rode their bikes on the course and adjacent greenway (while I pushed Gray in the jogging stroller) before we did packet pickup. Then we stuck around and swam for an hour.
We got to the race around 6:15 am and had plenty of time to get a great spot in transition. The race finally started at 7:30 am.
There were a small group of Best Buddies kids (that need assistance) and then the juniors were off. Carter had a great swim and passed the kid in front of him.
The start of the bike section ...
And finishing his second loop on the bike (and passing Cohen who was Carter's buddy in the Tri My Best Triathlon two summers ago). We see Cohen at every triathlon we do and love catching up with him and his sweet family. He needs less and less assistance every race and I'm sure we'll be racing with the able bodied kids soon!
Starting the run ...
Carter finished super strong and sprinted the last 100 yards or so of the race.
Carter's times weren't as good last summer as the summer before but I could tell he was trying harder again this race. Unfortunately there were issues with the timing software so they didn't have results done at the race. They were finally posted this afternoon and Carter got second in the juniors division!!! His best finish ever in a triathlon!!!
What got him that place were his transition times - they were significantly faster than any other boy in the junior division. And he only beat the kid in 3rd place by 2.6 seconds! Here are Carter's times:
Swim - 1:25.0 (Rank - 5th)
Transition 1 - 0:40.1
Bike - 6:29.3 (Rank - 7th / Pace - 13.9 mph)
Transition 2 - 0:16.6
Run - 4:12.1 (Rank - 8th / Pace - 8:24/mile)
Total Time - 13:03.1 (Rank - 2nd)
We are super proud of Carter. We were told before leaving that the race organizers would send out the gift card prizes to the first and second place kids in each division. Carter is excited to see what he won!

Kids Arts Festival
We spent most of the day at the Kids Arts Festival at Pinkerton Park. We've been out of town for it the last few years and were excited to be here this year!
The boys spent hours doing tons of free crafts ...
They got some cool arm painting done too ...
But the big event for the boys was the art contest. Carter and Rylan were both able to submit two pieces of art work. Unfortunately I don't think they received Rylan's application for some reason (they didn't have tags for his work). And while his art was still on display, I don't think it was judged. And we all know Rylan is not the best with not winning. Not that he would have necessarily won, but he did submit some good stuff.
Carter though placed first in the intermediate (grades 3-5) drawing category!
He had done this awesome drawing at school near the end of the year! I think it is awesome!
His work will be displayed at the Franklin City Hall all summer.
