Utah Trip 2019 - Day 3

This is what we woke up to on Monday (May 27th).  There was probably 2" of snow on the ground.

We spent a little time in the tent playing games getting ready to brave the cold morning.

The snow continued through the morning and into the afternoon.  We got about 4" at our campsite and about 7" at the higher elevations of Bryce Canyon.

Once we got brave enough to leave the tent (which wasn't warm if you got our of your sleeping bag), we cleaned off the tent and then had breakfast in the warm car.

We drove over to Sunrise Point to check out the hoodoos in the snow and take a few pictures.

With the snow getting heavy again, it was hard to get good pictures!  Plus my lens kept fogging up!

We knew before leaving for our trip that there was a chance of snow.  But we were already flying with a lot of gear and didn't want to pack another whole bag of snow gear (it was hard enough carrying all our other duffels and the kid carrier through the airport!).  So we had to make due with lots and lots of layers and raincoats as the outer layer to stay dry.

Since we didn't have awesome hiking attire, we decided to drive through the park and stop at some view points.

Natural Bridge overlook was pretty awesome (when the snow slowed down enough to see it!).  It's really hard to tell in these pictures but it's massive (85 ft tall).

We made it to the end of the road through the park and Rylan and I checked our Rainbow Point.  The roads were getting rough so we only stopped for a couple of minutes.

It was pretty much impossible to see anything!

On our way back down through the park, Gray had had enough!

And the snow just kept coming!

You may have noticed I was taking pictures from the back seat.  By this point in the trip I was sitting in the back between Gray and Rylan while Carter sat in the front seat.  There was no more fighting and driving was so much more pleasant!

We stopped by our campsite and cleaned off the tent again (snow is heavy!).  Then we ate lunch in the car again - we shared hummus, pretzel chips, and fruit.

Then we went to the visitors center to finish the boys Junior Ranger booklets.  We went through the exhibits and watched a film about the park.

The snow was finally slowing down so we decided to do a hike.  We parked at the General Store near Sunrise Point and hiked the Rim Trail north.  While at the visitors center we learned about a program called "I Hiked the Hoodoos" challenge.  To complete it, you have to hike at least 3 miles on specific trails and take pictures at 3 benchmarks.  So our goal was to reach one of those benchmarks.  Goals are always good to keep the boys going!

The hike was very muddy (and cold) but beautiful!

We made it to a benchmark!

It was about 1.25 miles to the benchmark so we did a total of our 2.5 miles.  We had planned on doing a lot more that day but we so glad we still got to do something!

We decided with the weather that it would be a good day to eat dinner out.  We drove over to Tropic (only about 10 minutes from the entrance of the park) and had dinner at Pizza Place.  The pizza was so good and we had way more than we could eat.  Brian and I got the chicken bacon ranch and the boys got a cheese pizza.  We were so stuffed that we decided to do a short hike before heading back to camp.

Closes to Tropic is a hike that is part of Bryce Canyon NP (but not behind the entrance gate).  Mossy Cave Trail is off of Highway 12 and is a short hike to a cave and waterfall.  We probably did about 1.5 miles round trip.

This hike was at a lower elevation so it was a little warmer and there was no snow.

The hike followed this water to the waterfall.

There were a few cool arches along the way.

We were also able to get another benchmark for the "I Hiked the Hoodoos" challenge!

The waterfall ...

The arches from the other side of them ...

The view from the top of the waterfall back toward the trailhead.

And upstream of the waterfall ...

The cave (we weren't overly impressed).  This is a natural spring and the icicles are supposedly impressive in the winter.

This was a great easy hike to end our day!

We headed back to camp for one more cold night.  Luckily we figured out how to stay a little warmer each night!

Gold Cup Semifinal

Last night we went to the Gold Cup semifinal game at Nissan Stadium.  The United States men's national team was playing Jamaica.  The big boys got us the tickets by doing a soccer clinic the night before (in the extreme heat and humidity - THANK YOU!).

Our seats were on row W of the upper deck.  This was the view from them ...

Look at all those good looking (and red, white, & blue) boys!

Before the game started we moved to the opposite corner where no tickets appeared to be have been sold and sat in row G.  The view was actually pretty good and we could pick out specific players.

The US started off really strong with several chances.  Weston McKennie scored in the 9th minute!

And then the lightning delay started at 15:27.  The game started at 8:35 pm (which is already past the boys' bedtime) and the delay ended up being 90 minutes.  Everyone had to leave their seats and the field for most of that time (we could come back during the 15 minute player warmup period).  We sat in the concourse, ate a pretzel, and did puzzles on my phone.  It wasn't too bad but the boys were definitely getting tired.

We were very happy to be back in our seats.  We kept busy during warmups taking selfies ...

The game finally started at about 10:20 pm.  And this was Gray at 10:25 pm ...

Carter and Rylan were still holding it together and seemed to be enjoying watching the game.  It was an exciting game with lots of scoring opportunists which helped.

Just after half time, Rylan passed out for a couple minutes and then Pulisic scored and we woke him up with our cheering - Gray didn't stir though.

The power nap helped him though and he stayed awake the rest of the game.  Then Carter passed out with about 10 minutes left in the game but Pulisic scored again and he woke up!

The US ended up winning 3-1.  Jamaica was impressive though and kept it interesting.  The game ended just before midnight.  We had parked at Brian's office so we got on the road about 12:30 and home at 1 am.  I'm glad we stuck it out and luckily the boys slept in a little this morning.

Concacaf Next Play

Brian got an email this weekend from the Tennessee State Soccer Association about a coaching workshop and kids festival run by Concacaf.  Concacaf puts on the Gold Cup which is a biennial men's soccer tournament among teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean region.  Brian couldn't attend the coaching workshop on Monday but Carter and Rylan were free to do the kids festival last night.  And the best part - the first 40 kids received two free tickets to the semi-final Gold Cup game in Nashville (which is tonight).

Because I really wanted the free tickets, we planned a day downtown yesterday since the kids festival was in the Metrocenter area.  I took the boys to String City at the Country Music Hall of Fame and then to the new Tennessee State Museum.  Though we didn't get to watch the women's World Cup game, we were showing our support all day!

Gray had a baseball game so Brian got him from us and the big boys and I grabbed some food and headed to the soccer fields an hour early.  The gates to the fields were still locked and we were the fourth car in line (we weren't the only ones wanting free tickets!)

The coaches put on a great clinic for the kids.  Most of the kids were part of travel programs and there were a lot of great kids out there (it humbled Rylan a little).  But I think they had fun and they did well.  And we got our free tickets (and another mom was nice enough to give me one of her tickets they didn't need so we could have 5 tickets - yay!).

Warner Park Programs

I signed the boys up for a few free programs at Warner Park this summer.  Mac and Kieran were also there so that made it even more fun for them!

The first one program we went to was "Old Fashioned Creek Walk".  The boys got to search the Little Harpeth River for crayfish and other critters.  The people running the program helped us find and identify all sorts of things we'd never heard of before (there were tons of water-penny beetles on the rocks which I'd never heard of before).

The boys did another program called "Bird Nesting Knowledge".  The program was done so well and we learned so much.  There were several short stations we visited and they were all completely different.  We learned a lot about barn swallows and got to see a lot of nests with eggs and babies.  They build there nests on the walls of the nature center (they totally look like they are just going to fall right off).  The boys also were challenged to build nest using only two fingers to imitate a beak.  Then they put rocks on them and poured water on them to see if they would hold up.  All of ours did!

The boys are signed up for one more program at the end of summer.

Rylan got braces (back on June 3rd)!  He was so excited, until he was sore for a few days.  But he's super proud of them still and loves showing off that he's got them :)

Swim Meet #2

Carter and Rylan had another great swim meet on Tuesday!  This one was against the Murfreesboro Comets and was at a high school in Murfreesboro.  The pool was inside which was probably good because the high was only in the low 70s and breezy.
