Carter had his first soccer game of the spring season yesterday.
I'm coaching again this season but without Missy because Will didn't play much last season and they didn't sign him up again. I finally got a parent to volunteer to be my assistant coach and coach the second field during our games.
We only had 3 players return from last season - Carter, Caleb, and Brett. Caleb is a little shy and didn't play a lot in the fall but has matured and is out there now. I love Brett but he was our pusher last season and I was a little nervous about dealing with that again (he'd push everyone down on both teams in they were near him) but he did amazing yesterday and didn't push once. I'm so proud of him!
We've had two practices so far and both were a little short due to it getting dark early still (we start at 5:30 pm and there are no lights on the fields). We have 12 kids on our team and all different skill levels. But the boys mostly don't touch the ball with their hands so that is a great starting place. One of Carter's classmates (Campbell) got on our team. Carter now claims Campbell as his best friend (last season it was Carson whose mom I'm friends with and we have occasional playdates with). We have one huge kid (probably weighs 20 lbs more than Carter with 0% body fat) who has some great skills already but he can take out our little ones (not on purpose). We only have one shy kid that cries some and doesn't want to come on the field (he did better the second practice and played a little yesterday). The kids are all great though and it should be a fun season.
Yesterday's game went well. I had our huge kid on my field and he scored a ton and made it difficult for Carter to get many touches. But our game was also at 1 pm, Carter's naptime, so I think he was just a little out of it and not being very aggressive. Carter loves to score, obviously, and usually does so hopefully he'll get the opportunity next week!
