So far I'm super happy with Carter's kindergarten teacher. I feel like Carter is learning a lot already and that Mrs. Colasso uses some really fun and creative methods for teaching. Carter comes home singing new songs everyday. They cover all different things - the sounds of the letters, the days of the week, etc.
I've been able to get pretty much information out of Carter about the more social times at school - lunch, recess, specials (PE, art, etc) - but getting information about what he's learning is harder because I ask him less specific questions (since I'm not 100% sure they are doing). Carter usually comes home with a few papers/worksheets he did that day so we always talk about those at least.
I really liked these from yesterday. We have this book (Fun Dog, Sun Dog) and have read it many times. At the "Listening Center", the kids did a little worksheet about this book after it was read to them. Since he had extra time, Carter got to do the worksheet twice.
His favorite parts of the book where when the dog got sprayed by the skunk ...
And when he had to take a tomato bath.
We read the book last night and the drawings are exactly like the ones in the book (same colors used, same positioning of the dog, etc). Carter said he drew them from memory too (I'm not sure about that, though Carter is usually right!).
Today Carter had this worksheet (front and back). He had to write the names of his friends in the class (they have name tags on their desks and the kids copied their names). Carter's handwriting is improving a lot! He told me that Ms. Colasso told him he had to write his little a's like this now (he was doing a "c" with a straight line next to it - now it's more of a circle with a line down from the top). Also, Mrs. Colasso writes the date on the board each day and Carter was obsessed today with writing it on all the pictures he drew this afternoon. You can see he wrote it under his name on his worksheet.
From talking to Carter, it sounds like he's making lots of new friends. The first week or so wasn't rough but he didn't talk to anyone it sounded like. Now he has stories about different kids everyday. I actually volunteered in the cafeteria last Tuesday and then ate lunch with Carter. (One of the biggest volunteer requests at the school is in the cafeteria to help open everything for the kids and bring them things they need, like napkins and spoons). It was good to meet some of Carter's new friends and see that Carter is doing just fine!
