Go Vols!

We are still loyal Wolfpack fans, but we have adopted UT since moving to Knoxville. We are definitely bigger basketball fans than football fans, but we still watch most of the football games on TV. Knoxville is a football town though. About half the town wears orange on Friday and Saturday. The support is crazy. We're used to the Triangle area of NC where you have NC State, Carolina, Duke, and Wake Forest fans all mixed together.

Brian and I don't tend to wear orange on game day, but I had to put Carter in his UT outfit today since NC State played on Thursday.

UT crushed Western Kentucky today. UT has a new coach this year, Lane Kiffin. I think the opinion of the fans has been pretty mixed about him, but I'm guessing most people are loving him today!

We took a few videos of Carter today.

Here's one of him standing up and "sitting" down.

Here's a video of Carter throwing or spiking a football.

End of Summer

I'm not looking forward to summer ending. Carter and I have had so much fun spending lots of time outdoors this summer. We love going on walks and runs, swinging in the swing hanging from our deck, going to the zoo, going to storytime at the UT Gardens, and going to the pool (this is our favorite).

We went to the pool today for the last time (it closes this weekend). We had the entire pool all to ourselves - it was really nice! Here are a few pictures:

Check out that bit of a mohawk Carter's sporting! I think I may need to trim his hair on the top of his head soon.

Here's a picture of Carter in his float from the beginning of June when we were at the beach house in NC. He sure has changed!

GO PACK!

NCSU kicks off their football season tonight against South Carolina. Carter is ready to watch the first 30 minutes of the game before his bedtime! Go Pack!

Sleeping

Carter's sleeping habits have really changed a lot in the last few weeks.

Carter's naps are finally getting longer. Hopefully that doesn't change now that I'm writing about them! I've been working on getting him to take two naps a day. He usually takes one about 3 hours after getting up and then a second one in the middle of the afternoon (around 2 or 3pm). And they usually last at least an hour (sometimes the afternoon nap is closer to 2 hours).

This depends though on us being home at the right times. If I'm not walking with Sarah in the morning, I usually go running with Carter. Unless I get out early, Carter will fall asleep during the run so his first nap is short. Also, if we do walk with Sarah, Carter's nap is usually during our walk so it's short then too. So this will throw him off for the day. Sometimes I'll try to get him to take a third nap and other times I just end up with a cranky, tired kid that doesn't want to sleep. Also, if we're running errands during the day, sometimes Carter will fall asleep while we're out or while I'm driving. But I try really hard to know when he's getting tired and be home so he can get a good nap.

Carter does well taking naps in his crib now. I usually will rock him in the glider in his room for 5-10 minutes before putting him down for a nap. He is pretty much always falling asleep in my arms before I lay him down in his crib. This weekend though I put him down fully awake and he only cried for about a minute before falling asleep. I've tried that a couple more times and he wasn't having it and I eventually went back into his room and rocked him. We're going to work on this though.

Getting Carter to bed at night has really changed over the last few weeks. He used to always fall asleep on me when I nursed him before bed and I'd just put him down in his crib asleep. Suddenly a couple of weeks ago he stopped falling asleep. So I've been rocking him in the glider for just a couple of minutes after feeding him and then putting him in his crib awake. At first he was crying it out for 30 minutes but it's been getting shorter and shorter. The last few nights he'll only cry for about 10 seconds. I still feel terrible when I close his door and he cries, but I know he's fine.

Also, Carter used to wake up every 30-60 minutes for a few hours after going to bed when he used to fall asleep on me. Now that he's going to sleep on his own in his crib, he's pretty much dropped this habit.

I probably shouldn't write this because I'm going to jinx myself, but Carter has been sleeping through the night for the last 4 nights. He goes to bed around 7:45pm and gets up around 6am. He's still waking up at night (usually around 3 or 4am), but he's been going back to sleep pretty quickly. I really hope he continues to sleep through the night!

I think Carter still needs more sleep than he's getting, but at least he's getting a little more than he used to.

I stressed for a long time that I was really messing up Carter's sleeping habits by letting him fall asleep on me every night, but it seems like it's all working out (and the transition has been easy). I'm glad I didn't force anything before Carter or I was ready.

Splash Pad

We went to the splash pad today with Sarah and Mary Grace after we walked on the Turkey Creek Greenway by Anchor Park. It was a little chilly this morning when we first started our walk but warmed up enough by the time we were done.

Since Carter isn't big enough to run around on his own, I ended up running through the water while holding him. I'm sure I looked like a big goof, but Carter seemed to really like it so it was worth it. I also sat him down some and let him get sprinkled by the water which he seemed to enjoy as well (though he's Mr. Serious in most of the pictures we got).

New Teeth

Both of Carter's top lateral incisors have finally broken through. They started coming through the middle of last week. He chewed on his tongue for a couple of days while they worked their way down. This is the only picture I've gotten that show those teeth (click on the picture to get a zoomed in view). And, yes, he's in Charlotte's crate again. He likes hanging out in there!

Carter has been in a much better mood now that those teeth aren't hurting him so much. He made it through our entire car buying process yesterday without too much fussing. And he made it through a 1 1/2 hour meeting I had at work on Thursday. It wasn't easy, but I was able to keep him entertained enough that he wasn't too distracting to everyone.

Developments

We're starting to see Carter figure out a lot more stuff. It's really cool! Here's some of the recent stuff:

Carter has figured out how to turn his sippy cup around when he picks it up the wrong way. He used to just suck on the spout and get a bunch of air without seeming to care. Now he knows how to turn it around 180 degrees to get water instead.

Carter's been playing the game of throwing something, having you pick it up and give it back to him, and throwing it again for a while, but now he thinks it is hilarious and laughs and laughs.

Carter knows when Brian gets home from work and gets super excited. We're usually playing on the floor in the family room when Brian gets home. When Carter hears the door to the garage open he perks up and starts crawling toward the door. He's usually squealing with excitement as he crawls.

Most of our windows are low and Carter can stand at them and look out. The window in his room though is higher. Carter has been trying to stand on some of his toys in order to gain some height and see out.

We think Carter is right handed. We've noticed that he does most things (like feed himself, pick up toys) with his right hand.

Subaru Forester

We got a new car today!!! Brian was driving a Saab 9-2x Aero (which is essentially a Subaru Impreza WRX). It was a cool car but was becoming impractical for our family since we wouldn't be able to fit a convertible car seat in it. We like not having huge cars, but it was just too small for us.

Carter saying bye to the Saab ...

So, we sold it to CarMax and bought a new 2010 Subaru Forester from the Subaru dealer. It is very similar in size to my 2007 Toyota Rav4. But, it has a manual transmission! This was a big selling point for us. We both learned to drive on manual transmissions and prefer to drive a manual when given the choice. The car has a huge moonroof which I bet Carter will love once he's facing forward in a carseat.

Carter getting his first driving lesson ...

The dealer let us take the Forester home last night to think about it and drive it a little more. We parked the car in the garage because we had a chance of rain last night. When we went out to the car this morning, we discovered that it was making noises. It sounded like there was an animal stuck in the body of the car. We could hear something like little claws pawing around. It was really freaky! We tapped on the wheel well and the noise stopped. We moved the car out to the driveway and we haven't heard the noise since. We told the dealer about it and they just sort of laughed (I think they thought we were crazy). So, if the car starts smelling in a couple of weeks, I hope the dealer is willing to fix the problem for us!

Crawling

Here is a video of Carter chasing me while holding a toy. I was trying to show off how he'll use just one of his arms to do his army crawl while holding a toy out in front of him with his other arm, but he only does it a few times in this video.
