First Day of Kindergarten

Carter started kindergarten today.  When I went to get him from his bedroom this morning when he woke up, the first thing he said to me was, "I'm ready for kindergarten!"

Carter's been a little quiet when I talked to him about kindergarten recently which made me think he was a bit nervous.  But this morning there seemed to only be excitement.

Right after Carter got up and got dressed, we went outside for a few pictures.  He really wanted me to take his picture.  He was the director and told me all the places he wanted to stand.  This is just a couple of the many pictures he asked me to take!

After eating breakfast and building a Lego set (of course), we took a few more pictures before driving over to school (I had to bring in all of Carter's school supplies and didn't want to have to walk with the huge box).

Carter loves his new backpack we ordered from Land's End.  He especially loves his name written in "golden".

SO EXCITED!!!  (He told me to take his picture doing this too!)

Love this picture of brothers :)

Brian got a work phone call in the middle of the night and was up for a few hours (again) but got up in time to say bye to Carter and get a quick picture.

A picture at the back door to the school where the kids get dropped off ...

Today and tomorrow we get to walk the kindergarteners to their classrooms.  The older kids started school last Friday.  The kindergarten girls went to school for a half day yesterday and the boys for a half day today.  All the kindergarteners go for a half day tomorrow and then they are on a regular schedule starting Monday.

Carter at the door to his class ...

Carter knows only one girl in his class that went to his preschool (Katie).  They were never in the same class but they played on the playground at the same time.  They did the kindergarten sneak-a-peek at the same time in the spring so I got to see that they both knew one another some.  Randomly we met a set of twin boys that are in Carter's class at Pinkerton Park yesterday.  Their mom knows Ashely from childhood (it was the first time they'd seen one another in years) and we figured out the boys were in the same class.  I tried to get them all to play together a little but they were all only interested in their current friends.  Hopefully though it helped Carter a little to have met them already!

Carter loves his cubby for his backpack!  It's so much more spacious than his hook at preschool :)

Carter at his seat with his teacher, Mrs. Colasso.

Working on his "morning work" ...

I tried not to stay too long but had to take those few pictures!  Carter still didn't seem nervous at all and just wanted to work on his art - it was no big deal that Rylan and I were leaving!  Which was great!

Rylan and I picked Carter up at noon.  I snapped a quick out-of-focus picture of him running to the car.  He looks so happy!!!

The teachers asked that the kids buy lunch in the cafeteria this week so they could learn the process.  Since I wasn't sure Carter would eat the food, I promised him I'd take him anywhere he wanted to go for lunch.  He chose Culver's which is his favorite place to go right now because he can get ice cream with sprinkles (though he won't touch a hamburger).

On the drive to Culver's and at lunch I asked Carter all about his day.  He kept drawing a blank when I asked him to just tell me what he did so I have to ask lots of specific questions.  Here is what I got out of him ...

- Carter likes his teacher.  She's nice.

- Carter sits at the purple table.  It's called that because the bin at the end of the table that holds their pencil pouches is purple.  Carter is using the green pencil pouch that that he picked out at the store because his name couldn't be written and show up on the black and grey ones.  Inside the pencil pouch is a pack of crayons, a glue stick, and a pencil.

- Carter is the only boy at his table.

- They read a story in class.  The kids got to sit on the carpet and all have assigned squares.  Carter's is red.  The boys sit on two colors and the girls sit on two different colors.

- Carter got to play on the playground.  They are only allowed to play on two of the play structures (and they are the same).  They can't go on the one with the monkey bars.  Carter didn't play with some of the boys because they were playing a game that was like tag and the teacher said they weren't allowed to play tag and they had to keep their hands to themselves.

- Carter got to be the line leader twice today.

- Carter really, really liked buying lunch at school.  He ate everything.  He got chicken nuggets (without ranch because they don't have that), a roll, apples, and strawberry milk.  He didn't like the strawberry milk but he didn't know it was strawberry when he got it.

- Carter didn't really talk about anyone in particular as a new friend, but I don't think he was isolated either.  A lot of the kids in his class live in the same neighborhood that makes up the majority of our school, but I'm not sure how many were really friends already.  I've talked to some of the parents and they know one another, but I'm not sure if the kids really do.  Carter's usually pretty good at making new friends.  Plus he often gets along even better with the girls so tomorrow should be good.

- Carter is looking forward to going to school again tomorrow.

Here is what Carter brought home today from school today ...

We are super proud of our kindergartener and how brave he was starting his new school today!!!

Big Boys

The boys are full of firsts today!

Carter decided he wanted to take a shower instead of a bath tonight.  And he did.  I'm not sure he'll ever want to take a bath again!

Rylan FINALLY pooped in the potty.  He's been doing great with peeing in the potty this summer.  He still has an occasional accident but they are rare.  But Rylan has been rarely willing to even try to sit on the potty to poop.  When we have been able to get him to sit there, he never goes.  So I usually leave Rylan in a diaper in the morning until we leave the house.  And then I beg him to tell me if he needs to poop other times so I can put a diaper on him.  He's getting better at this and there are less accidents in his underwear (they were daily there for awhile).  Rylan is a stubborn and difficult kid to potty train but we are making progress!

My Alphabet Journal

Carter starts kindergarten tomorrow!  So before that happens, I need to do one last preschool post.  Carter had the most amazing and wonderful teacher last year.  I loved her.  One really special project she did with the kids that we got on their last day was an alphabet journal.  I finally scanned all the pages tonight to share with everyone else!

Recent Pictures

Last Sunday, Jen, Missy, and I put together a little surprise baby shower for Suzy at Wild Ginger.  Jen took Suzy out for a pedicure and message and then forced her to go to dinner at Wild Ginger, which Suzy did not want to go to at all.  Luckily Jen twisted her arm because we were all there waiting for them!

Suzy was completely shocked!

You knew she had no idea since she was wearing workout clothes too :)

Missy had these cute cupcakes made (the baby's name is going to be Jessie Joy W.)

A group shot before heading home ...

I found this huge garden spider in our front bed the other day.  I haven't seen it since but we looked it up and it's a "good" spider :)

My mom came for a visit starting last Monday night (she heads home tomorrow).  We've been keeping very busy!

On Tuesday and Wednesday we spent a lot of time swimming.  Last week was the last week the pool was open all day.  The Y has limited hours now that school is back in session.

I'm still working on finishing up the boys' new rooms.  They are both getting close and I'll post pictures soon!  I repainted the letters in Rylan's room to match his new colors and the boys got to paint the "R" and "C" again.

Carter had his Kindergarten Assessment on Thursday morning.  The teachers test the kids on basic skills such as letter and number recognition and a few more advanced things like sight words to get a feel of where each child is.  That way they can even out the classes to make sure one teacher doesn't have a large percentage of kids that are further behind or more advanced.

I tried to ask Carter afterwards how it was and he didn't want to talk about it.  He was a little nervous about the testing even though I tried to prep him for it and tell him it wasn't a big deal.  I know he did fine.  He did tell me he counted to 100 but didn't know any of the sight words (I've been lazy with that this summer - or just having too much fun!).

On Thursday we also went to the Adventure Science Center with my mom which is always fun.

On Friday I had my OB appointment so the kids stayed home with my mom.  I got my lab work back today for that and my glucose test was fine but I'm a bit anemic so it's time to start taking iron supplements.  I didn't do this with either of my first two pregnancies though.  Hopefully I'll start having some more energy soon though!

I left my mom with a craft for the boys to do while I was at my appointment.  I had gotten these dinosaur costumes after Halloween super cheap and the boys put them together.

Love the tail!

After my appointment we took the boys bowling.

Carter won by a couple of points but Rylan got a tiny rubber duck from a claw machine in the arcade so he was the big winner of the day, according to the boys at least.

That night we went to the Williamson County Fair - I'll do a separate post about that.

On Saturday morning, the boys had their field trip to the Franklin Farmer's Market.  We spent the rest of the day at home catching up on yard work.

On Sunday morning we found some letterboxes.  These were all drive-by ones that were in parking lots and only a few feet from our car.  It was still fun and the boys had to follow clues as we were driving.  Plus there was no whining about getting tired or wanting to be carried!

Carter had his first baseball practice of the season Sunday afternoon.  We switched Carter this season to Brentwood Baseball Club.  The Grassland league (which Carter played with in the spring) is really small in the fall for Carter's age group and most of our friends weren't planning on playing anyway.  We are now on a team with two of Carter's friends from preschool and speech (twins Jack Henry and Christopher).  Their dad is the head coach and their mom and I are good friends.  One of the boys Carter became friends with on his last team (Drew), also switched to this league and is on the same team.  The rest of the team are kids returning from the spring so Carter and Drew are the only new ones, but I think it's going to work out great.  The parents are really involved on this team and there are a lot of assistant coaches so it's going to be a totally different experience.

When we got to practice, Jack Henry, Christopher, and Drew were already there.  All of them gave Carter a huge hug.  They are all great boys!  Jack Henry though was disappointed that Rylan wasn't there (we left him home with my mom so he could nap).  Rylan and Jack Henry shared a phone (with games on it) and chair during Carter and Christopher's speech session last year and become good buds :)

On Sunday night we went to a Nashville Sounds game.  I expected the game to start at 6:35 pm (like they always do on Sunday).  However, I hadn't realized that the game the night before had been rained out so they were playing a double header.  The first game started at 5:05 pm, lasted 7 innings, and then the second game started at 8:05 pm.  So we ended up seeing a few innings of both games.  The Sounds were doing awesome though and there were a ton of homeruns.

Coke had a booth set up outside the game where you could make personalized Coke cans for free.  My mom and I stood in line while the boys and Brian went in to watch the game.

Rylan's favorite part of the game (as always), the popcorn!

Rylan started preschool gymnastics today at Harpeth School of Gymnastics.  I think our friends make up about half the preschool and mommy and me classes!  I wasn't going to sign Rylan up until the Spring but he really wanted to do it and this way it's easy for us to have playdates with our friends after class each week.

Afterwards we went swimming again at the Y (we kept getting mis-information about which Y had open pool hours and finally the third one we went to was open!).  Tonight Brian and I went to Carter's elementary school for the kindergarten parent orientation.  We got lots of paperwork to fill out and lots of information to sort through.  But Carter's teacher (Mrs. Colasso) seems great.  She's young but has taught for 5 years already (this will be her 4th year at our school, which is how long it's been open). There is one girl in his class that Carter knows a little from preschool (she's never been in his class but they had recess at the same time.  I'm glad he'll at least have one familiar face.  He has his first half day on Thursday with the rest of the kindergarten boys (the girls do their first half day on Wednesday).  I'm excited for him!
