Carter started kindergarten today. When I went to get him from his bedroom this morning when he woke up, the first thing he said to me was, "I'm ready for kindergarten!"
Carter's been a little quiet when I talked to him about kindergarten recently which made me think he was a bit nervous. But this morning there seemed to only be excitement.
Right after Carter got up and got dressed, we went outside for a few pictures. He really wanted me to take his picture. He was the director and told me all the places he wanted to stand. This is just a couple of the many pictures he asked me to take!
After eating breakfast and building a Lego set (of course), we took a few more pictures before driving over to school (I had to bring in all of Carter's school supplies and didn't want to have to walk with the huge box).
Carter loves his new backpack we ordered from Land's End. He especially loves his name written in "golden".
SO EXCITED!!! (He told me to take his picture doing this too!)
Love this picture of brothers :)
Brian got a work phone call in the middle of the night and was up for a few hours (again) but got up in time to say bye to Carter and get a quick picture.
A picture at the back door to the school where the kids get dropped off ...
Today and tomorrow we get to walk the kindergarteners to their classrooms. The older kids started school last Friday. The kindergarten girls went to school for a half day yesterday and the boys for a half day today. All the kindergarteners go for a half day tomorrow and then they are on a regular schedule starting Monday.
Carter at the door to his class ...
Carter knows only one girl in his class that went to his preschool (Katie). They were never in the same class but they played on the playground at the same time. They did the kindergarten sneak-a-peek at the same time in the spring so I got to see that they both knew one another some. Randomly we met a set of twin boys that are in Carter's class at Pinkerton Park yesterday. Their mom knows Ashely from childhood (it was the first time they'd seen one another in years) and we figured out the boys were in the same class. I tried to get them all to play together a little but they were all only interested in their current friends. Hopefully though it helped Carter a little to have met them already!
Carter loves his cubby for his backpack! It's so much more spacious than his hook at preschool :)

Working on his "morning work" ...
I tried not to stay too long but had to take those few pictures! Carter still didn't seem nervous at all and just wanted to work on his art - it was no big deal that Rylan and I were leaving! Which was great!
Rylan and I picked Carter up at noon. I snapped a quick out-of-focus picture of him running to the car. He looks so happy!!!
The teachers asked that the kids buy lunch in the cafeteria this week so they could learn the process. Since I wasn't sure Carter would eat the food, I promised him I'd take him anywhere he wanted to go for lunch. He chose Culver's which is his favorite place to go right now because he can get ice cream with sprinkles (though he won't touch a hamburger).
On the drive to Culver's and at lunch I asked Carter all about his day. He kept drawing a blank when I asked him to just tell me what he did so I have to ask lots of specific questions. Here is what I got out of him ...
- Carter likes his teacher. She's nice.
- Carter sits at the purple table. It's called that because the bin at the end of the table that holds their pencil pouches is purple. Carter is using the green pencil pouch that that he picked out at the store because his name couldn't be written and show up on the black and grey ones. Inside the pencil pouch is a pack of crayons, a glue stick, and a pencil.
- Carter is the only boy at his table.
- They read a story in class. The kids got to sit on the carpet and all have assigned squares. Carter's is red. The boys sit on two colors and the girls sit on two different colors.
- Carter got to play on the playground. They are only allowed to play on two of the play structures (and they are the same). They can't go on the one with the monkey bars. Carter didn't play with some of the boys because they were playing a game that was like tag and the teacher said they weren't allowed to play tag and they had to keep their hands to themselves.
- Carter got to be the line leader twice today.
- Carter really, really liked buying lunch at school. He ate everything. He got chicken nuggets (without ranch because they don't have that), a roll, apples, and strawberry milk. He didn't like the strawberry milk but he didn't know it was strawberry when he got it.
- Carter didn't really talk about anyone in particular as a new friend, but I don't think he was isolated either. A lot of the kids in his class live in the same neighborhood that makes up the majority of our school, but I'm not sure how many were really friends already. I've talked to some of the parents and they know one another, but I'm not sure if the kids really do. Carter's usually pretty good at making new friends. Plus he often gets along even better with the girls so tomorrow should be good.
- Carter is looking forward to going to school again tomorrow.
Here is what Carter brought home today from school today ...
We are super proud of our kindergartener and how brave he was starting his new school today!!!
