Winner

During the summer, the Brentwood Library has a fantastic summer reading program.  They have a ton of performers and great classes, all for free.  When we are there, the boys will enter the weekly drawings that they have.  On Monday they both submitted answers to the mascot challenge (this years summer reading theme is "On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!" so everything has been sports themed this year).  They both answered that the picture was of Griz, the Memphis Grizzlies' mascot.

On Wednesday, I got a call from Pat (our favorite librarian) that Rylan's name had been drawn.  He was SO EXCITED!!!  After entering so many drawings, one of the boys had finally won.

The boys are attempting to share the prize :)

Fishing

We took the boys fishing for the first time this year on Sunday.  Honestly, I don't think we even went last year.  We had picked up worm's at Dick's the day before and headed out early to the lake in Westhaven.  This is the place where as soon as you put a worm in the water, there are a dozen fish around it.  It's a perfect place for those with no patience :)

I love this little series of pictures when Rylan wanted to touch the fish he caught.

Carter wanted all three pieces of the cane pole and it was super long (Rylan had two pieces).

Brian and I never sat down - we were constantly taking fish off hooks and putting on new worms.

Gray tried fishing for the first time ...

He caught one!!!

The big boys each caught between 10 and 20 - I lost count.

Gray was more interested in the ducks.

Until they started getting to close (I think the ducks thought we had food for them).

Daredevil

At least he's wearing a helmet!

Rylan would like to thank Papa Art and GG for this cool toy :)

Cow Appreciation Day

We love when Chick-fil-A gives away free chicken!  We are happy to be silly and dress like cows :)

Free chicken is especially good when you've had 45 minutes of swim team practice and than swam with friends for 3 more hours!!!

OCK Playdate

I organized a playdate with the boys in Rylan's Otter Creek Kindergarten class on Thursday at the Cumberland Park fountains.  This was the first time that the kids got together this summer.  They were a tight bunch at school this year and I know they've missed one another.  Maddox, Mason, Henderson, Hudson, and Keegan were able to join us.

Gray is loving the fountains.  We went there a couple of weeks ago and this was his second time at the fountains this summer.

Gray got braver and braver and I eventually had to stop him from trying to drink the water in the pooling section!

Swimming Playdate

Yesterday we met one of Carter's best friends from preschool at the pool.  Sarah Kate and Carter were in class together all three years that he was at Brentwood Baptist.

I'm friends with Sarah Kate's mom (Christy) but she teaches at the preschool and we just don't see each other very often anymore.  We ran into each other a couple weeks ago and set up this pool playdate.  The kids had fun and warmed up to one another quickly after not seeing each other in over a year.

Summer is flying by and I'm hoping to get in lots more playdates in the next couple of weeks!

Jack Daniel's

On Sunday we took my dad and Jan down to Lynchburg to do the Jack Daniel's distillery tour.

The tour was really, really good.  It's mostly outdoors but they have it planned that they bus you up to the top of the hill and you work your way back down to the visitor's center.  There is also a lot of shade which helped with the 90F temperature.  The grounds are really pretty and our tour guide was really energetic and fun to listen to.

The boys never complained on the hour plus long tour and listened to a lot of what the guide said.  Brian and I have done brewery and winery tours but this was our first distillery tour.

After the tour we walked to downtown Lynchburg and had lunch at Barrelhouse BBQ (it was REALLY good).

Fireworks

We had lots of storms blowing through yesterday afternoon and evening.  Most of the fireworks around the area were able to happen during a brief breaks in the rain, but the city of Brentwood cancelled theirs and had it tonight instead.

We were not super motivated to go tonight but we did and were super happy we did.  We ended up parking at Woodland Middle (which is adjacent to Crockett Park where they shoot off the fireworks on the baseball fields).  Luckily it was not nearly as crowded as it would have been the night before and we easily found parking.  Before we've parked a mile away and walked on the greenway to the park.

We got to Crockett an hour early and sat in the car about 30 minutes as a rainstorm came through.  Then we walked just a few minutes and set up a blanket on the grass.

All the kids loved the fireworks.  Gray pointed at them and made "oooohhh" and "aaaahhhh" sounds before eventually getting comfortable on my lap and almost falling asleep.

The finale was awesome and the big boys thought it was super cool.

Swim Meet #5

Today was the boys last regular season swim meet of the season.  It was a home meet and went really fast this time.  Warmups were at 7 am, the meet started at 8 am, and we were done at 10:30 am.  It was overcast and drizzled a few times which ended up being perfect!

The boys did really well!

Rylan somehow took another 8 seconds off his backstroke time and WON THE EVENT!!!

(And got a heat ribbon, of course.)

Here are Rylan's times for today:

Freestyle: 37.47 seconds, 6th place (0.3 seconds slower than last week)
Backstroke: 36.05 seconds, 1st place (best time by 8.83 seconds)
Freestyle Relay: 02:33:50, 2nd place

Carter did great too and improved his best backstroke time.  He still DQ'd in the IM but this time it was for underwater recovery in the butterfly (which means he didn't get his arms high enough out of the water).  I'm so proud of him for not DQ'ing because of his breaststroke technique.  He worked so hard on that last week!  Carter's medley relay also DQ'd but it was because of the boy swimming breaststroke (not Carter who swam butterfly).

Here are Carter's times for today:

Freestyle: 28:23 seconds, 10th place (exact same time as last week - 0.15 seconds slower than his best time)
Backstroke: 28.41 seconds, 3rd place (best time by 1.38 seconds)
Freestyle Relay: 01:48:52, 2nd place
Medley Relay: DQ
Individual Medley: DQ

The last meet of the season is the county championship at the end of next week.

Rylan's 6th Birthday

Rylan's birthday was last Tuesday, June 28th.  Our "middle man" is whopping six years old!!!

Because Tuesday was going to be a super busy day with a swim meet and soccer practice, we decided to celebrate Rylan's birthday on the Sunday before his birthday.

He started off the morning with opening his presents from Brian and me as well as from my mom (who was still here visiting).

We got Rylan a couple of Lego sets, a watch, a motorized car that can drive on land and on water, and a stomp rocket sort of toy that uses water.

Rylan hasn't liked cake for about a year now (he never eats it anymore at birthday parties).  So he requested doughnuts instead for his birthday.

The big boys discovered they could fit into the box for the motorized car!

Carter didn't have a party for his 6th birthday because it was right after Gray was born and I wasn't sure I'd be able to handle planning and running a party with a brand new baby.  Instead we gave him $200 to buy any Legos he wanted.  Rylan decided he wanted to do the same thing for his 6th birthday.  So after breakfast we headed over to Toys R Us.  Rylan likes Legos but not nearly as much as Carter (he's really good at them but runs out of patience quicker than Carter).  So Rylan decided he wanted to pick out other toys.  He ended up with some plastic ninja weapons, a Hot Wheels parking garage, a Matchbox parking garage, and several new cars.

We were planning on going out to lunch after Toys R Us but Rylan just wanted to get home to play with his new toys.  So we ate lunch at home and put together his new parking garages.

Rylan also really wanted to go to the pool.  Unfortunately rain was coming but we went to the pool anyway.  We only got in about 10-15 minutes before the first clap of thunder and we had to leave.

After the rain finally ended, Brian took the boys to one of our neighborhood ponds to try out Rylan's new motorized car.  Apparently is was pretty cool!

Then we finally made it out for a meal at El Sombrero.

Rylan said he loved his birthday and I'm so glad!  I felt bad not having a party for him (this was his first year not having one).

On Rylan's actual birthday, he had a swim meet in the morning.  Luckily Rylan was put in good heats for him and was able to win three heat ribbons on his birthday!  The Kona Ice truck also showed up so the boys got a special treat at the meet!

After the swim meet, we went home and picked up my mom and Gray and then went to the Nolensville Rec Center to swim for awhile.  After that we had a quick dinner at home and then headed out for soccer practice.  I brought along cookies and we shared them with our friends after practice to celebrate Rylan's birthday.

Rylan said he had another awesome day.  Yay!

Happy birthday, Rylan!!!
