Dentist

I took Carter to a pediatric dentist today. I really wanted to have the stains on his teeth checked out.

Carter did AWESOME. It didn't hurt that there was a television with Toy Story 3 playing above his head.

He did freak out just a little when we first went back. The cleanings are done in one large room and there are 7 or 8 stations. The chair is more of a padded table that looks a lot like what's at the pediatrician's office. Carter did not want to lay down - he held on to me tight and said "no". So I laid on the table with him on top of me while the hygienist took a look in his mouth. Once Carter saw the movie playing, he calmed down. So I got up and laid him down by himself.

Carter let the hygienist look at his teeth, polish them, and scrape at the staining. She scraped for about 5 minutes before Carter started getting a little squirmy. She was able to scrape a little bit off but didn't make much progress.

Then we went into a room and did x-rays on Carter's front teeth. I thought he'd freak out about this but he sat in the chair with the apron on with no complaining. He let the two hygienists put the films in this mouth and sat still as they took the x-rays.

After x-rays, we watched Toy Story 3 for a little longer while we waited on the dentist.

The dentist was super friendly with Carter. Carter seemed to trust him enough and let him poke around in his mouth for awhile. The dentist also tried to work on the stains and got a little further but Carter started fighting him after a few minutes.

The dentist has no idea what's causing the staining, but it's just staining. He said the stains aren't going to hurt Carter's teeth, but they are something that bacteria could attach to and that could cause problems. However, he didn't want to force Carter to let him scrape for 15 minutes and cause Carter to have a bad experience and memories. So we're just supposed to keep brushing with the Spinbrush. Also, Carter's bite looks good side to side and top to bottom. So we didn't mess Carter's mouth up by letting him use a pacifier for too long!

I'm so happy that Carter did well!
