I was 100% sure the babies had not made it. I had not seen or heard them yet and we had some cool nights after they hatched (in the 40s). And I hadn't seen Maddie leave the nest to get them food.
Brian decided to check on them this evening and went around the house from the front instead of opening the garage door underneath them. And (of course) he saw two living little birds! I've been worrying for nothing! I was thinking we were going to have to chase Maddie off the nest so she didn't starve/dehydrate. But Brian looked up mourning doves and determined that the mom and dad are life partners and take morning/night shifts on the nest after the babies are hatched. I was thinking Maddie looked rough today but it must have been the dad sitting on the nest during the day (he's smaller and just looks different).
I think the babies hatched about 10 days ago so they should only have a few more days in the nest. It seems so fast! I hope we get to see them more now that they are getting big (and hear them!). Maddie has been doing a good job of covering them up and keeping them warm!
