Huntsville

On Wednesday my mom and I took the boys down to Huntsville, AL for the day to go to the US Space & Rocket Center and Sci-Quest.  We have free admission to both with our AMSE membership - I love that membership!

At the Rocket Center, the temporary exhibit was on black holes.  We zoomed through it (the boys had no attention span to listen to us read information boards to them after sitting in the car for a hour and 45 minutes).  They did spend a few minutes catching styrofoam peanuts in nets in this exhibit (I have no idea what it was demonstrating though).

It was cold still so instead of exploring outside, we headed over to the Saturn V Hall (which is the newer building).

The boys had to play on the indoor playset first.

Carter was brave and stood in the rocket test area that is super loud.

Since it was spring break, the Rocket Center had several special activities set up.  One was a bounce house that the boys went in a few times.  And somehow had to themselves each time.

There was also a rocket launch.  Each kid was given a straw and told to stick some clay in the end.  Carter just stabbed the lump of clay with the straw and pulled it back out with clay in the end.  The guy running the experiment said no one had done that before and was impressed by the good seal Carter made.

Then the straw was loaded onto this little contraption.

It was aimed and then this stick was raised ...

And dropped to launch the rocket.

Carter's was apparently the best one all week.  It almost hit the ceiling in this giant building!

Rylan used the same method as Carter and did just as well!

I think the best part for the boys was getting to retrieve their rockets!

Next we got some temporary tattoos (to go with the St. Patrick's Day tattoos we still hadn't scrubbed off).

Then we explored the exhibits for a bit.  The boys are really into rockets right now.  The other day Rylan sat for 20 minutes watching the countdown and launching of one rocket on the computer.  And then wanted to watch another.  Carter would actually let me explain a lot of the exhibits to him this time too.

Running on the walkway used to load a space shuttle ...

Carter with an actual moon rock ...

The boys started to complain about getting hungry so we took a lunch break outside where it was just starting to get warm.  Not a bad view for lunch!

After lunch, we went back inside for another spring break event - the Space Olympics.  We joined midway through a session so only did a couple of things.

One "mission" was to pick up hot meteorites (hard boiled eggs) with gloves (oven mitts) and put them into a bucket.  Carter got to do the demonstration.

The kids lined up and it was a race to get as many meteorites as you could (I think each kid got two).

Rylan dropped his first egg and he decided to just burn himself on the second :)

Next we headed outside.

Carter rode the one ride he was big enough for (there are only three rides there).

Carter loved it!

There was no line so the kids got to ride twice.  The operator offered a third time but Carter said he was done.

After a little more exploring, we decided to go find a letterbox that is near the Rocket Center.  Rylan took a nap in the stroller as we walked about half a mile over to where it was.

Carter was very helpful and we eventually found the right tree stump.

Next we headed across the street to Sci-Quest.

After playing a couple of hours, we were all worn out and decided to head home.

Random, but just like last time we went to Huntsville with my mom (last summer), we met a little girl named Rylan.  Those are the only other Rylans we've ever met and both have been girls in Huntsville!  A few of my friends know other boys named Rylan, but it's still rare to hear the name.
