The Color Run

Last Saturday morning, Dana and I ran The Color Run in downtown Nashville.  If you haven't heard of it, here's a description from their website:

The Color Run is a five-kilometer, un-timed race in which thousands of participants are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. The fun continues at the finish line with a gigantic “Color Festival,” using more colored powder to create happiness and lasting memories, not to mention millions of vivid color combinations.

You are "required" to wear white so here we are, nice and clean still.

Brian, the boys, and my mom also came downtown to watch the race.  It was chilly (mid-40s, I think) so they were a little frozen by the time Dana and I were done.

There were thousands of people running (another friend of mine who also ran the race told me she heard there were 15,000 runners - I don't doubt it!).  Dana and I sort of just merged into the crowd about 30 minutes before the race instead of going to the end of the line.  At the time, I had no idea where that was or that there were so many people there.  When we finished the race, there were still at least a few thousand runners and when we left the race, at least several hundred.  I'm so glad we "snuck" in!

At check-in, we were each given our own individual color packet that we were supposed to use at the after party to throw into the air.  I guess some people were a little impatient and lots of color got thrown before the race!

Before the race, the mascot for The Color Run came right through all the runners in a golf cart.  I have no idea how no one got run over!

After almost 20 minutes, we were the third wave to start the race!

The race started outside of the Titans' stadium, crossed the pedestrian bridge over the Cumberland River, went through downtown Nashville (passing by all the bars and fun stuff), back over the river, and around LP Field to the finish.  It was supposedly 5K, but it felt short.  Maybe I've just been running too many half-marathons or maybe it's just more fun running with someone in an un-timed race!

There were 4 color stations on the race course.  Since we mainly could only jog due to so many people walking, I was able to take lots of pictures while running.  Here's the first color station up ahead!

I believe the "color" is colored cornstarch.  There are volunteers with the stuff in bottles that squirt it at runners and then there are also barrels of the stuff that other volunteers just take handfuls of and toss it at the runners.

There are crazy people that lie down in the middle of the road and roll in the stuff.

Approaching the orange color station ...

Crossing back over the Cumberland River with a great view of LP Field ...

The pink color station!

I risked my camera and pulled it out in the middle of the blue color station.  Don't open your mouth while going through one of these!

In addition to the four color stations, there were also two places people had water guns with green and purple water.

And the finish!

We got pretty colorful!

The boys (and Brian and my mom) were freezing so we didn't stick around long after the race.  We didn't join in the after party, but here is one of the times that finishers threw up their color packets.  I wonder how much more colorful we'd gotten if we joined that craziness!?!

Before leaving, Dana and I went to the blower area to get some of our loose color blown off.

The boys were AMAZED watching people get blown off.

I tried to get a picture with Carter post-race and this is as close as he would get to me :)

The race was fun and different, but I still like competitive, timed races better.
