Here is a description of what it is:
Lil Sluggers is a national child development program created to introduce children ages 2-6 to the game of baseball. Lil Sluggers classes develop important baseball skills such as throwing, fielding, hitting, and base running. Developmentally appropriate equipment and games are used to teach your child the game of baseball in a fun, exciting, and positive environment!
- Proper base running and sliding techniques.
- Hitting, focusing on proper stance, level swing, and follow through off the tee. Begin hitting from a pitch by the coach.
- Throwing…point, step, and throw with proper motion for distance and accuracy.
- Fielding, with emphasis on using two hands, staying in front of the ball.
- Catching pop flies with two hands.
- Learning various offensive and defensive game situations
- Fitness and agility
Carter's class never plays games against other teams. They just have practice and learn skills.
The sessions are at Crockett Park at the indoor arena which is awesome. We don't have to worry about getting rained out or there being a lot of other distractions that take the kids attention away from their coach. The class limit is 6 and there were only 5 boys there on Friday.
When we arrived, Carter got a shirt with the Lil Sluggers logo on it.
The coach is absolutely great. I'm sure he was going by a practice plan provided by Lil Sluggers, but he had a ton of patience with the boys and was really good at keeping them focused (which isn't easy at this age).
All the equipment is brightly colored and fun. This set of foam blocks was the dugout and where the coach instructed the boys to sit whenever he explained something new to them.
Doing some stretches at the beginning of practice ...
The boys learned how to run the bases and what they are each called.
They learned how to field a ball with "alligator hands".
And how to hit off a tee.
At the end of practice the boys ran around the bases one more time while getting chased by an alligator (this seemed to scare a couple of boys and they just ran to home plate!).
To finish off, there was a "1-2-3 Go Baseball".
Carter loved it. He did GREAT! The session lasts for 8 weeks - I'm excited to see how much the boys learn. I think this is a much better introduction to baseball than playing in a tee ball league coached by parents with a full team of 4-year-old boys. Instead of fielding the ball and hitting it just a few times each and then standing around the rest of the time, the kids are always doing something in this program. I'm sure we'll join a tee ball league at some point, but this is great for now!
